Maligne River Samson Peak Winter Jasper National Park Canadian Rocky Mountains Alberta Canada

This stock photo shows a partially frozen Maligne River and a wooden fence, during winter as the river drains from Maligne Lake, with a view towards Samson Peak (3077 metres/10095 feet), Maligne Lake Road, Jasper National Park, Canadian Rocky Mountains, Alberta, Canada. Jasper National Park forms part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jasper National Park is the largest of Canada's Rocky Mountain Parks, spanning 10,878 square kilometres (4200 square miles) of broad valleys, rugged mountains, glaciers, forests, alpine meadows and wild rivers along the eastern slopes of the Rockies in western Alberta. There are more than 1200 kilometres (660 miles) of hiking trails (both overnight and day trips), and a number of spectacular mountain drives. The Maligne River begins south of Maligne Lake. Forming from the meltwater of Replica Peak, the river heads north, passing under Mount Mary Vaux, Lysfran Peak, Mount Unwin, and Mount Charleton before emptying into Maligne Lake. The Maligne River drains the north end of Maligne Lake and heads northwest to Medicine Lake. It then flows west, entering the Athabasca River. The River represents the northwestern boundary of the historical Hunter Island region.
